Abstract

As the number of the elderly increases, concerns about senile dementia and countermeasures are growing. The purpose of this study is to explore family care-givers’ attitudes toward senile dementia. To identify the attitudes toward senile dementia, we conducted Q methodology. A Q set of potential attitudes toward senile dementia was identified from a literature search and depth interview on family care-givers. From this, 71 attitudes item toward senile dementia were identified. 53 subjects participated in the conduct of Q-sorting. Family care-givers’ attitudes toward senile dementia were classified as 5 types: ‘type 1: pressure & responsibility’, ‘type 2: love & affection’, ‘type3: ambivalence’, and ‘type 4: compassion’, ‘type5: active management.’ This study revealed that family care-givers have different explanatory frameworks for the attitude toward senile dementia.
