- Abstract
- Background: Menstrual irregularity is common in women with reproductive age. It may have relation to mental health problems, particularly to stress and depressive symptoms. The aim of this study was to understand the relationship between menstrual irregularity and mental health problems in Korean women.
Methods: We analyzed data of 4775 subjects from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) Ⅴ 2010~2012. Subjects were asked about menstrual irregularity on self-reported questionnaire. The relationship of menstrual irregularity with mental health problems was assessed by using multivariate logistic regression analysis.
Results: The prevalence of mental health problem parameters such as stress, depressive symptom, suicidal ideation was significantly higher in menstrual irregularity group than in women who had a normal menstrual cycle. It was positively associated with mental health related problems after adjusting for possible confounding variables.
Conclusion: Menstrual irregularity was associated with mental health problems in Korean women.
