- Abstract
Motor learning is the process of improving the smoothness and accuracy of movements through repeated practice. The cerebellum and the basal ganglia are important for motor learning. The cerebellum is specialized for supervised learning based on the error signal encoded in the climbing fibers. The basal ganglia are specialized for reinforcement learning based on the reward signal encoded in the dopaminergic fibers from the substantia nigra. The purpose of this study is to introduce the role of the cerebellum and the basal ganglia in motor learning, the brain plasticity according to motor learning in animal and human work, and the research using voxel-based 3D MRI volumetry and to present the basis to the direction of further study. If coaches and athletes understand the property of brain plasticity in the acquisition of motor skills, it can help the improvement of performance.
