A Study on Nurses’ Subjectivity Regarding the Use of a Physical Restraint in the Neurology Ward of a Tertiary Hospital: A Q-methodology Study

초록

This study attempted to identify the subjective perception types of neurology ward nurses regarding the use of physical restraints by applying Q methodology. A total of 43 Q samples were selected, and 20 neurology ward nurses were convenience sampled and selected as the P sample, and the data collected through Q sample sorting were analyzed using the PQ Method program. As a result of the study, three types were derived. Type 1 ‘Physical restraint minimization based on patient behavior analysis’ is a type that makes active efforts to minimize the application of a physical restraint and remove one through individualized nursing. Type 2 ‘Physical restraint maintenance focused on work efficiency’ is a type that applies restraint for therapeutic purposes and shows a passive attitude toward removing one. Type 3 ‘Dependent physical restraint application due to uncertainty’ is a type that experiences uncertainty in decision-making between the patient’s rights and actual job performance and shows an attitude of applying a restraint according to the will of others, such as their supervisors. Based on the above research results, it was confirmed that the subjective types of nurses who apply and remove restraint are diverse, and it is expected that it will serve as the basis for the development of protocols to move forward to non-use restraint.
