Background: Pain is uncomfortable feeling patients experience subjectively, and it is difficult for health care professionals to assess accurately. Although there are well known pain assessment tools that are used in English literature satisfactory, there has not been well designed, validated protocols in Korea. The purpose of this study is validate the modified SF-36 protocol developed initially for patients treated in our institution. Materials & Method: The modified SF-36 evaluating the patient's functional aspects, and the tool with VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) evaluating pain have been initially developed in our institution to serve on basis for future protocol development in Korea. These had been utilized to patients visiting the hospital due to pain in order to evaluate its validation. From Jun. to Dec. 2004, it has been applied to 246 patients who visited the hospitals due to pain. The content of protocol was reviewed by staffs of neurosurgery, nursing department and department of statistics. The data were then analyzed by descriptive statistics, Cronbach Alpha and Pearson correlation, and one sample T-test. Result: The scores on the VAS and the modified SF-36 in Korean version were significantly correlated. The scores on this modified Korean version of SF-36 also used to evaluate quality of daily life of patients that showed clinical correlation. Conclusion: Our protocol consists of modified VAS and modified Korean version of SF-36. Results showed the validity of the modified Korean version of SF-36 scale. It seems to be useful instrument for assessing pain and quality of life that correlates with clinical settings, but needs to be reevaluated with this protocols in future.
