STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed the clinical and radiologic results of 20 patients with compression or stable bursting fracture treated by percutaneous vertebroplasty with allogenous bone graft. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the preliminary results of percutaneous vertebroplasty with allogenous bone graft. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: Percutaneous vertebroplasty has been used in spine angioma, metastasis and osteoposis. Percutaneous vertebroplasty has recently been introduced as a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of pain associated with compression fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 20 cases of the compression or stable bursting fracture of thoracolumbar spine from May 1998 to May 1999. The technique involves percutaneous puncture of the involved vertebra via a transpedicular approach under fluoroscopic control followed by impaction of allogenous bone. We checked a pain grade, height loss and kyphotic angle. RESULTS: The mean pain point decreased from 8 point to 3 point at postoperative 4 weeks. Patients reported pain relief postoperative 4 days. Height loss of the fractured vertebra was restored from 25% to 10%, and kyphotic angle was restored from 112° to 3.9°. CONCLUSION: Percutaneous vertebraplasty is a valuable tool in the treatment of compression or stable bursting fracture of thoracolumbar spine, providing pain relief, easier nursing care and early mobilization in appropriciate patients.
