PURPOSE: To perform a comprehensive in vitro optical assessment of the RayOne Galaxy intraocular lens (IOL) (Rayner Intraocular Lenses, Ltd) to characterize its optical quality and functional visual range. METHODS: Three samples of the +20.00 diopters (D) RayOne Galaxy IOL were assessed using the OptiSpheric IOL PRO2 (Trioptics GmbH) bench. All measurements used polychromatic light and a model cornea inducing +0.27 µm of spherical aberration. Modulation transfer function (MTF), through-focus MTF (TF-MTF), area under the MTF (MTFa), and simulated visual acuity (SimVA) were evaluated across pupil diameters of 2 to 4.5 mm. Photic phenomena susceptibility was also assessed via point spread function (PSF) imaging. RESULTS: The Galaxy demonstrated robust optical quality and an extended functional vision for small pupils (2 to 3 mm). At these apertures, the SimVA remained ⩽0.2 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) across a wide defocus range (+1.00 to −3.00 D). The Galaxy showed a distinct higher plateau in the 0.00 to −2.00 D defocus range on the TF-MTF curve for small pupils. PSF analysis also demonstrated a compact central peak and minimal halo rings. However, a significant decline in objective metrics, including SimVA, was observed with increasing defocus for pupils >3.5 mm. CONCLUSIONS: The Galaxy demonstrated an extended range of vision with good optical quality and a low degree of positive dysphotopsia, particularly at small pupil sizes. Optical performance at intermediate and near distances tends to decline notably as pupil diameter increases. © SLACK Incorporated.
