Intraoperative radiotherapy for T3-T4 biliary tract carcinoma

The management of advanced biliary tract and gallbladder carcinomas continues to be a challenging problem for surgeon and radiation oncologists. Limited operability or inoperability frequently presented with marginal effect of external radiation therapy due to poor radiation tolerance in the operative site. Therefore, we began exploring the efficacy of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) with postoperative external irradiation. Our limited experience with IORT demonstrates the decrease in local failure and improved survival rate.
