Imaging prostatitis with Tc-99m ciprofloxacin

The authors describe Tc-99m ciprof loxacin scintigraphic and magnetic resonance images (MRI) of acute prostatitis. Tc-99m ciprofloxacin imaging is known to detect areas of bacterial infection. Chronic prostatitis is difficult to eradicate and its exacerbation can manifest as an acute bacterial infection. However, there is no valid diagnostic test and treatment often involves the empirical use of antibiotics. Visualization of acute bacterial prostatitis in patients with chronic prostatitis, made possible with the Tc-99m ciprofloxacin imaging, may increase the diagnostic validity.
