The platelets have the most important roles in adequate hemostasis. Platelets adhere to subendothelial connective tissue and aggregate when exposed to vascular trauma. The author found that this sequence of serial events rapidly form a platelet plug or thrombi at injured vascular area. There are suggestions that volatile anesthetics interfere with platelet aggregation in vitro. The author have studied the platelet function of the patients who were exposed to 1% halothane with nitrous oxide and oxygen. From 20 patients undergoing the minor elective surgery, the author performed the blood samples at preinduction, 30 minutes after induction of anesthesia and 60 minutes postoperatively. Also the bleeding time was chocked at each sampling period. Platelet aggregation was induced by ADP and epinephrine. The results were as follows: 1. Bleeding time was prolonged about 22.9% after 1% halothane anesthesia and normalized at 60 minutes postoperatively. 2. The platelet aggregation was inhibited by 1% halothane anesthesia significantly, and almost normalized at 60 minutes postoperatively. Halothane produced a transient impairment of platelet function during anesthesia. There was no clinical evidence of significant prolonged bleeding time during anesthesia. There is significant correlation between inhibition of platelet aggregation and prolongation of bleedingvtime produced by 1% halothane, nitrous oxide and oxygen in vitro.
