A Study on Serum Tocopherol Levels in the Newborns and Mothers

초록

In order to investigate the correlation between the maternal and newborns serum tocopherol leveles serum vitamin E levels were measured in 127 newborn infants and in their mothers at the time of delivery, and in 30 normal healthy non-pregnant women as the control group. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The average serum tocopherol levels in 127 newborn infants and their mother were 0.31±0.14㎎/100㎖. and 1.38±0.36㎎/100㎖, respectivly, while serum tocopherol levels in 30 normal healthy non-pregnant women averaged 0.89±0.17㎎/100㎖. Values in the pregnant women were about 55% higher than those of normal healthy nonpregnant women's. 2. There was no significant differences in the mean value or distribution of the maternal serum-tocopherol with the number of previous pregnancies and ages. There was also no significant differences of serum tocopherol levels in newborn by maternal ages, parities, birth weight, and sex. 3. The ratio between mean serum vitamin E levels of mothers and infants was 4.5:1. 4. There was coefficient of correlation, r=+0.2(P<0.05) between maternal vitamin E and infants vitamin E, and produced regression equation with Y=0.105X+0.179. It appeared to be a certain degree of positive correlation between the serum tocopherol levels in mother and infant. It was suggested that screening of the serum tocopherol levels in mothers in the last trimester of pregnancy would identify those infant who may be at risk from a low birth serum tocopherol levels.
