Pictogram Design for the Assessment of Pediatric Pain

초록

Background : Pain is the most common symptom that accompanies a disease and is a protective mechanism in which the body responds to harmful stimuli. Pain experience is a sensory and subjective multidimensional phenomenon and its evaluation is a difficult and important task for clinicians. This is especially true for children and adolescents who are immature in terms of language and experience. Visual pain assessment tools that can improve the effectiveness of communication between patients and clinicians in multifaceted assessment of pain should be developed. Methods : Through literature review, the concept of pain, the characteristics of self-reporting of children and adolescents, and the theoretical basis for solving visual perception problems were established and language-based rating scales were put together to prepare a list of the forms of expression of pain characteristics. In addition, pain pictograms were designed through the established process. Result : Fifteen words for expression of pain quality were derived and transformed into sensory symbol-based pictograms, and the design plan was proposed for clinical trials for follow-up studies. Conclusion : Medical design is a field in which it is difficult to have an idea for problem solving unless multidisciplinary mutual understanding precedes. The purpose of this study was to analyze clinical difficulties experienced in the assessment of pediatric pain and seek convergent methods of medicine, cognitive science, and visualization designs. This study is meaningful in that it illustrated how the foregoing methods are applied.
