Department of Neurology, Korea University College of Medicine Backgroud : The data on the relationship between Parkinson‘s disease and stroke have been inconsistent; some showed a reduced risk of stroke in Parkinson’s disease patient, while others showed increased risk of stroke. Method : We measured the frequency of idopathic Parkinson’s disease(IPD) in stroke patients who admitted to Korea University hospital from January 2000 to September 2002. We compared these data to those observed in Parkinson‘s disease prevalence in Ansan-city, Korea (general population study). We investigated stroke risk factors in Parkinson‘s disease patients with stroke. Result : We screened 7 patients with Parkinson’s disease with stroke among 849 stroke patients. The relative risk for IPD in stroke patients was 0.64 compared to the Dutch population-based study & 0.55 compared to prevalence in Ansan-city. Conclusion : In our study, we found lower risk for Parkinson’s disease in stroke patients as compared to general population.
