초록

The use of bee products for health purposes has a long history. In modern times, the positive effects attributed to them, long recognized in folk remedies, are supported by scientific investigations. Evidence shows their fungus-fighting, inflammation-reducing, antibacterial, cell-toxic, and liver-protective properties in honey, royal jelly, propolis, and pollen grains. This chapter examines the safety concerns of honey and related products. While strong scientific evidence supports their usefulness, a variety of pollutants and harmful substances have been found in bee products, including toxic metals, agricultural chemicals, drug residues, mycotoxins, phytotoxins, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. At times, the occurrence of these substances has been associated with negative health outcomes. The chapter explores current evidence on the safety profile and side effects of apitherapy, highlighting the need for standardized guidelines, patient screening for allergic predispositions, and rigorous clinical trials to ensure safe and effective therapeutic use. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Olugbemi Tope Olaniyan, Abraham Olufemi Asuku, and Chioma A.
