Obesity as a risk factor for chronic low back pain

초록
Low back pain is one of the most common disorders in clinical settings and it is also a major cause for the absence of work and economic burden. More importantly, the chronic low back pain has gained a great attention because of its tendency to be refractory to the variety of treatments that are available even in modern era of medical development. In this sense, every effort should be given to make correct diagnosis and institution of proper management. However, it is also as important to search and verify, and clarify, the factors, that are associated with this chronic transition of symptoms and disabling with or without much of suffering even from basic daily activities. At present, there has been known numerous factors that are related to the chronicity of low back pain. One of these, although not seriously concerned previously, is obesity. Despite well known entity as a direct or indirect cause of initiation or progression of low back pain there has not been enough attention and well designed studies regarding to obesity as one of major influences on chronicity of low back pain. This study is to briefly review the published literature on obesity as a possible candidate of chronicity of low back pain, and to give audience the insights on recent trend of research works on obesity related problems, especially focusing on the low back pain.
