Current Trends in Capsule Endoscopy

Endoscopy plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive disorders. Since its introduction in 2001, the clinical indication for capsule endoscopy (CE) has expanded significantly. CE is available for small bowel exploration and still under development. Over the past decade, CE has achieved significant improvements in areas such as miniaturization, resolution and battery life. As a result, CE is currently the forefront tool for the investigation of the small bowel bleeding and an effective alternative to wired enteroscopy. However, CE still has a number of drawbacks, including incomplete examination, limited diagnostic yield, and therapeutic capacity. In order to solve these problems, various methods are under research and development. In the near future, we expect that new technologies will improve CE and broaden its indications. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss about the types and efficacy of CEs currently available. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2022.
