Cyclin D1 and p21 expression in gastric adenocarcinoma

We evaluated cyclin D1 and p21 expression in 61 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma using the immunohistochemical staining. Immunoreactivity for cyclin D1 was detected in 22 patients(36.1%), and p21 was in 31 patients(50.8%). No significant correlation was observed between the expression of cyclin D1 and p21 immunoreactivity and age, sex, site, tumor invasion, tumor size, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, or stage except histologic type(P=0.045 for cyclin D1 and 0.002 for p21 respectively). There was no significant survival difference between patients with cyclin D1 expression and those without cyclin D1 expression(P=0.304). Also, no significant correlation was observed between survival and presence or absence of p21 expression(P=0.836). Also, no significant difference was revealed in the comparison of survival between 4 subgroups. In this present study, we concluded that cyclin D1 and p21 immunoreactivity were not valuable for predicting the prognosis of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma.
