Treatment of Eichner B3 case using implant-assisted removable partial denture with expanded supporting zone: a case report

초록

Implant-supported fixed or removable prostheses are commonly used treatment options for partially edentulous patients. Although implant-fixed prostheses demonstrate superior masticatory efficiency and patient satisfaction, their indications may be limited by economic factors and the patient’s systemic health status. Conventional removable partial dentures may also present limitations in support, retention, and stability depending on the number and distribution of the remaining teeth. In particular, in patients with only one pair of opposing posterior teeth on one side, classified as Eichner index B3, RPDs are prone to rotational movements and compromised masticatory function. In this clinical report, an implant-assisted removable partial denture (IARPD) was fabricated in the maxilla to enhance the support zone and reduce rotational movement. Surveyed crowns were fabricated on strategically placed implants to facilitate support and retention of the removable prosthesis. In the mandible, a shortened dental arch (SDA) concept was applied by restoring up to the bilateral first molars with fixed prostheses. As a result, the denture support area was expanded, and a prosthesis with improved support, retention, and stability could be delivered. Satisfactory esthetic and functional outcomes were achieved, and the treatment results are herein reported.
