Objective: This study is designed for the assessment of mean thickness of rectus abdominis muscle and the effect of mechanical pressure on rectus abdominis muscle thickness using ultrasongraphy. Materials and Methods: Twentyeight healthy adults were participated. Using ultrasonography, the thickness of the bilateral muscle thickness and overlying subcutaneous tissue was measured at two different levels, in which one was umbilical level and the other was midpoint level between umbilicus and xyphoid process. The thickness of the rectus abdominis muscle and the subcutaneous tissue was measured without pressure and with maximal pressure applied by the ultrasound transducer at each level. Correlations between the thickness and body mass index and other measurements were investigated. Results: The average thickness of the rectus abdominis muscle and the subcutaneous tissue without pressure was 10.1 mm (range, 5.6∼13.8) and 13.8 mm (range, 6.5∼ 26.0) respectively at the midpoint level, and 10.1 mm (range, 5.9∼15.2) and 16.9 mm (range, 8.7∼27.1) respectively at the umbilical level. The average thickness of rectus abdominis muscle and subcutaneous tissue with maximal pressure was 8.1 mm (range, 4.7∼10.9), and 11.9 mm (range, 5.9∼21.8) respectively at the midpoint level, and 8.3 mm (range, 4.6∼13.4) and 12.8 mm (range, 7.2∼21.2) respectively at the umbilical level. Conclusion: The thickness of the rectus abdominis muscle and the subcutaneous tissue is different in each person and according to pressure applied. The ultrasonography may be useful to accurately localize the rectus abdominis muscle.
