- Abstract
- The main symptoms of lateral medullary syndrome are ataxia, numbness, dysphagia, vertigo, nausea, dysarthria, hoarsness, Horner’s syndrome and decreased pain and temperature sensation, etc. Not included in these symptoms are autonomic and respiratory dysfunction. A lesion in respiratory center can cause respiratory failure. As it is called, Ondine’s curse is automatic respiratory dysfunction sparing voluntary respiration. A 43-year-old man was admitted because of a sudden vertigo, right facial sensory changes and episodes of respiratory failure during sleep. On 20th days after admission, central sleep apnea occurred 72 times with mixed type in the polysomnography. Two months later, on the polysomnography, central sleep apnea decreased, while obstructive sleep apnea increased. We report one patient with right lateral medullary infarction who developed sleep apneic syndrome with episodes of Ondine’s curse. Korean Journal of Stroke 1999;1(1):87~90
