- Abstract
- Currently, Korea is expected to have a profound negative impact on national productivity by aging accelerated due to low birth rates. Low birth rates cause the population decline, slowing of economic growth, and increasing social welfare burden. A decreased birth rate brings a deflation in economy. Also low birth rate can decrease the number of jobs and shrink the production in short to medium term. Childbirth increases employment, marriage, the demand for durable goods, and raises the price. An increase of birth rate can have a positive effect on Korean economy in shortterm as well as long-term period. A national policy-making focus on the recovery of birth rate will contribute to the stable social and economic development.
